Or at least, this is what the new Swarovski Fall/Winter Collection for 2018/2019 says. Just like all of their crystal innovations, the new Light & Shadow Collection is inspired by stories that define the moment we live in. This season, Swarovski puts an accent on how increasingly polarizing the society we live in has become over time.

As you may already know, inspiration emerges from strange places and this is why this innovation is not just a color contrast-based collection. Light & Shadow is inspired by the all-time distinction of right and wrong, light and dark, black and white, by the disparities of wealth in today’s society, but most importantly by the polarized viewpoints of the people within. Swarovski highlights the two very different ways people tent to envision their lives and subsequently, their future. The first one being a bright, cheerful and opportunistic approach to life, hence, the Light. And the second being the formidable, frightening and “life as a challenge” kind of mindset, hence, the Shadow. Therefore, this season they try to highlight both, exploring the tension between light and shadow and in the end, showing it of through literal contrast.

Ok, ok, we now know what their concept sounds like, but what does it actually look like?

Well, as always, Swarovski took four design theme paths with the collection, this time by the name of: Funtasia (the playful extrovert), Nostalgia (the thoughtfully muted character), Elegantia (the decadent) and Urbania (the survivalist). So let’s dip just a little bit into this seasons’ trends.

Funtasia

The playful, quirky and creative kidult of the bunch. Funtasia acts as an injection of bright positivity into fashion and, at the same time, as an antidote to the uncertainty of the future. The theme is dominated by vibrant colors and neon tints and is the perfect blend between fun and femininity. Cartoon-like motifs, overblown prints and Japan’s adorable “Kawaii” style are all merged into one, creating looks that are fashionably thrown-together for the “crazy-but-cute” young woman of the 21st century.

Nostalgia

The whimsical, serene and melancholic one. The one that takes it back to the roots. This theme fights against the overwhelming visual stimulus around by stepping back, to simpler and cleaner lines, with a twist of sentiment. Lace patterning, pearls and late 19th century elements represent the heart of this trend. It also includes the new Growing Crystal Rhombus Pendant, created by the couturier Iris van Herper, inspired by natural occurring crystals.

Elegantia

The decadent, seductive one, who takes everything to the next level. This trend is all about sensuality, glamour and an unclenched desire of celebration. It embraces the future at full and ignores the negativity of the past and the plain responsibilities of the everyday life. The theme is represented by everything bold and jazzy, feathers, pearls and metals and also a splash of Art-Deco and geometry. In my personal opinion, the definition of extra.

Urbania

The raw, urban survivor. Urbania is the one who leaves behind all of the idyllic mindsets of the other three and realizes that the utopic world is long gone. We are the ones left to renew it, as it’s resources are fading away. Chokers, chains, DIY inspired designs and a combination of activewear, industrial style and corsets is what gives birth to this trend. This time it’s all about comfort, utility and mobility, resulting in a cozy yet edgy look. Layers and Japan’s Wabi-sabi aesthetic represent a big part of this trend as well.

In my opinion, this new collection is eye catching, first of all because of the visuals (I mean come on, just look at the video below if you’re not yet convinced), and second, because of the story behind. I find it so interesting how Swarovski manages to attribute meaning to anything they do. And not only do they find meaning in everything, but whoever comes up with these concepts is one hell of a story-teller. Now, whether these stories are truly the inspiration behind the collection or they are brainstormed afterwards, I don’t really care. To be honest, I enjoy the story and crystal-wise speaking, I can’t even pick a favorite. They never cease to impress.
