Welcome to Coco’s rescue story and read about how he changed our lives for the better!
It all started on the last day of April 2023, when my then boyfriend left to the gym, and I wasn’t expecting him to be back until at least two hours later. After about 20 minutes I heard him whisper my name and, as I went into the hallway, there he stood in the doorway and in his arms: Coco. The most shriveled chicken we had ever seen, he was more dead than alive. My boyfriend had found him on the side of the road, far from civilization. Not anyone from our neighbours or family gave him any chance of survival, but we weren’t going to give up.
The exact moment my boyfriend got home with Coco.
Even though we already had a dog and a tomcat to care for, life wasn’t going to be quite the same after that moment. Having a rooster meant we would need more chickens for him and after getting a whole flock, having a second dog didn’t seem to be a big issue. That’s how we ended up with two large dogs, a tomcat and 11 chickens today.
Coco’s recovery
Of course we could not be sure if he was going to survive or not. The main problem was that we was not eating, nor drinking water. As harsh as it seemed, we needed to force-feed him and gave him water with a syringe. The main goal was for him to eat and drink on his own. If he couldn’t do that, he was a lost cause.
On the second or third day, I noticed that was pretty responsive to the music I was playing on my computer. So responsive in fact, that the first time he ate on his own was while listening to Hotel California, if you can believe it. That same day, he also drank water on his own. Only then we knew that everything was going to be alright.
From then on, it has been a roller coaster. Coco proved to be the most charming rooster with an amazingly loving personality. Yes, you read that right. Chickens are very loving animals, if shown affection. And Coco being the only “bird in the house”, took to us as his flock and family. Both of us working from home, we could spend all day with Coco and he was basically glued to us, constantly wanting our attention and to be near to us. In the following photos you can see just how much he yearned for affection and it created a beautiful and unique bond between us, a bond I wish all of you to experience with another being.
