Two of the most beautiful things can turn into a disaster for all parties involved.
Yes, keeping chickens is fun. Yes, keeping a garden is also fun. But how do you combine the both and make everyone happy? This is an answer I’ve yet to find out. But I will share my experience, so that you can avoid the same mistakes we did and actually get the best of both worlds.
Just like many people whose families kept chickens, we wanted to find that same connection with nature and know that we will eat the best eggs possible, while also admiring our beautiful chickens. Of course, we were naive enough to think that everything will be perfect: we’ll sit on the terrace, looking over our beautiful flower and vegetable garden, while the chickens are roaming peacefully through it. Well…

We definitely had the After and then the Before :D. Our flowers and vegetables have been mercilessly eaten and the grass and weeds are no longer with us. As much as it pains me to admit: chickens cannot range freely through your garden, even if you don’t want flowers and vegetables. For them to get all the benefits from free ranging would mean they got the chance to rummage through grass and plants. But if we will leave them be, all that we will be left with, is mud. And chickens need their greens as well. They also love to hide under bushes, trees or flowers.
A plan was needed. First, we decided to build a fence and let the chickens have their own yard. They have their food, water, chicken coop and outside shelter there and also five small trees they can climb on. Even if it’s more than enough space for them, of course they want to have the entire garden all to themselves. That’s why we still let them out to have their free ranging time as well. Until spring comes.

In the spring they we will sadly have to keep them in their own yard, as we need the grass, weeds and flowers to grow again. Hopefully it will last until autumn. It may be selfish of us, but we also want to our spring flowers to bloom peacefully, as we’ve invested so much time and money into having a beautiful flower garden. It would be a shame to let the chickens eat all of them. Of course, we would still provide enough greens for our chickens, as we care about their diet and well-being very much. And don’t worry, if they really want to, they always find a way out. 😀
All in all, balance is key. In order to keep everyone happy and provide the best life for everyone, even the free ranging must be done with moderation. Thank you for following our story, there’s always more content on social media.
