We never thought we would end up with a vegetable garden AND chickens
My boyfriend and I come from different backgrounds. But we both thought we would move into an apartment and live city lives. How wrong we were. ๐ I’d like to think, though, that everything happens for a reason. Despite hardships, this lifestyle brings great rewards. After all, you know what they say: “Don’t knock it, until you’ve tried it.”
Starting with the eldest, my boyfriend, Cristian, was born and raised in the countryside. Unexpectedly, he lived in an apartment. Luckily for him, all the other family members own houses and have always kept animals: all kinds of poultry, pigs and even goats and cows. Still, he rarely had to feed or take care of them. Therefore, he was a total newbie in everything house- and garden-related.
As antagonistically as possible, I was born and raised in a big city. My parents bought a house and kept chickens, in order to have farm-fresh eggs for me. Even though I was not really active in taking care of the chickens or working in the garden, I did pick up some things. But doing everything on your own is something completely different and it changed our lives forever…
Before moving in together, we were free of responsibility and could travel and go out as we wanted. That all changed after we moved in, but not because of chickens. The beginning was Masha, our first dog. After Masha, we also took in our neighbor’s tomcat, as they weren’t properly taking care of him. Only then did Cristian bring Coco home. And after we had put the “perfect” flock together, came Linda, our second dog.
To put it simply: we made it harder and harder to go out and have a normal social and stress-free life. ๐ We could laugh and cry about it at the same time. In winter it’s especially complicated, as the chicken’s water freezes, they need warm feed, the tomcat treats our house like a train station and the dog are used both outside and inside the house. But we are crossing our fingers that spring will bring our freedom back.
