Many factors influence egg laying and here’s how you can help

Chickens come in a variety of different breeds, each with their own attributes. Some are very good layers, while others are very resistant to harsh weather conditions or are very good for their meat. Nevertheless, if you want many healthy eggs, there are some things you can do to help your chickens be as productive as possible.

Here’s how we went from this…
…to this.
  1. It is important to note that chickens will be the most productive in their first year of life. That’s why most people prefer to keep a young flock. Our chickens will die of natural causes, but the younger the chickens, the more eggs they lay.
  2. Good food is an important factor, of course. Chickens need fiber, minerals and, most of all, protein. You can supplement these with different treats, like mealworms, fresh vegetables and fresh greens.
  3. In case of deformed or brittle shells, you may need to add a little calcium to their feed. Caution! Don’t overdo calcium. A little goes a long way and it should be done in the molting season.
  4. In case of too much calcium, you’ll see bumps on the shell or the eggs will be covered with white dust. Limit their calcium intake.
  5. Keep your chickens well hydrated, even in winter. They will need warm water in the cold months and cool water in the warm months.
  6. Keep your chickens warm. As already mentioned here, chickens can easily adapt to cold weather, but it is still important that their coop is well insulated and that they receive warm food and water in the cold months.
  7. A happy chicken is an egg laying chicken. Make them feel loved and relaxed. Hugs, friendly interactions and even toys (e.g. a swing) will make them live the happiest life possible and reward you with many eggs.

Keep in mind that chickens molt (change their feathers) only after the first year of life. As it is a very stressful process for them, they need all resources and will not lay eggs during molting season. This is perfectly normal. And even if many people assume that chickens do not lay in the cold months whatsoever, if provided with good living conditions, they will definitely produce.
