The Feathered Loves Of Chicken Keepers Cristian & Romina. How we chose our chickens
To build the ideal group of chickens is a pretty difficult thing. These birds may seem stupid and simple to some, but they are actually quite complex. Like wolves, chickens follow a strict hierarchy, from strongest to weakest, and accept changes with difficulty. This is how we ended up with our two-in-one chicken flock.
As you know, Coco was before all. When we decided on keeping him, we realized that we needed to provide him company as well. Coco was indeed very attached to us. It was something that flattered us so much, but he wasn’t meant to live in the house and be the sole chicken of the household. It was clear, he was lonely and was literally glued to us. Always. The relationship became unhealthy for him. So, we brought in some chicas. 😀
My boyfriend and I chose the most beautiful chicks we could find and brought them home. It was a real adjustment for Coco. He was afraid at first and couldn’t understand why we wouldn’t have him in the house anymore. It was heartbreaking for us, but it needed to be done. But soon his protective instincts kicked in and he started enjoying being all day with his girls. Here’s how the first variant of the flock looked like:

Cristian said to me one day:”We already have to care for so many animals. What’s the difference between having six chickens or 12?” And he brought home more. He was right, the difference in responsibility wasn’t that big. But here’s the catch. Only after ending up with 12 chickens, did we realize that Cindy, Chanel and the ones Zebra and India were roosters as well…we had to “get rid of them”. We exchanged India and Chanel for our egg-laying Sissi and we gave Zebra to Cristian’s grandparents. Now we have the two roosters, Coco and Săndel(formerly Cindy), and eight hens. Here they are:
