We’ve rescued a chicken…now what?
Animals are our “favorite humans” and still we had only rescued cats and dogs before Coco. He was a new challenge for us and a huge responsibility. What do chickens eat? How often? How do they sleep? It was a pretty scary time in our lives, as we had other rescues die in our care before. Thank God that Coco would not give up on life and you would not believe what helped him get better.
When my boyfriend brought Coco home, we did not know where to begin. He was as pale as a sheet and would hardly move. Everyone said he would not make it through the night, but he proved all wrong. Even if I had to feed him manually(even forcefully at times), he biggest step was when he drank water by himself for the first time. This is a moment I will never forget: I begged him for days to drink and finally, whilst so trustingly looking me in the eyes, Coco took his first sips. I knew at that moment that everything was going to work out.
We started with water and with the only food suitable for chickens that we had in our house: ground maize. Thankfully, it was more than enough and within two weeks in our care, he was already happily ruining our garden. And we didn’t mind a bit. Surprisingly, he got along very well with our dog Masha and our tomcat Prințesul, so well in fact, that they would all sleep in our living room: Prințesul wherever, Masha on the couch and Coco under the coffee table. Sometimes on the couch. Sometimes on the bed. A lot of times on our shoulder or head. 🙂
