One thing that I found useful in my reading journey is researching other people’s book recommendations, and thus finding what I really am eager to read about. This follows the exact same principle, in the hopes that maybe someone will find themselves interested in the books that I am going to share with you.

I will give a brief description of these books and the overall impression that I’ve had so far.

These will not be ranked, because I do not believe in such a system, as they are all unique concepts which I’ve enjoyed reading.

To begin with, I am going to recommend one of my recent reads, which is

// The Magus by John Fowles //

The premise of this book is how Nicholas Urfe envisions life, and how he live a shallow life in terms of relationships and connections with other people, especially love interests.

He then meets Allison when his neighbour throws a party and begins a relationship with her. Their love is quite a non typical one and he seems to be relieved to leave for Greece, in search of a the new job of being an English teacher at the Byron College in the Phraxos island, where he is bound to meet and be a victim of Maurice Conchis, the Hazard itself.

I want to add that even the reader is a victim of Maurice Conchis due to his mind games.

This book has been one of the most interesting I have read so far, it had so many plot twists that I could not believe my eyes while reading through them. If I had my memories erased, I would definitely read this book again, but I have to add that it is a quite long read, and you must be willing to arm yourself with a lot of patience, and not the intention to leave it in the DNFR (did not finish reading) pile.

It definitely is not to be categorized in one singular genre, as it jumps from Romance to Adventure, Horror and Thriller, and most of all, Psychological.

// Circe by Madeline Miller //

Circe is an adaptation of various Greek myths told from the perspective of Circe, the witch, mostly stories as told dwelling inspiration from the Odyssey. This novel explores Circe’s life from living with the Gods and being exiled on the island of Aiaia, where she accepts being shunned and begins exploring the extents of her witchcraft.

I believe that Circe has been misjudged and often treated worst because of how superficial the world can be seen. Most of what she has went through in life was harsh and she had to make sure she was not standing in someone’s way, but when she switched sides and stood out for herself, she was seen as not worthy of being surrounded by Gods.

I really enjoyed this read, it was a journey through the Odyssey, and it felt comfortable to read because the manner Madeline Miller used was relaxed and filled with history and myth.

I recommend this book to everyone that is fond of history and myth.

// Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass //

This is the autobiography of the orator Frederick Douglass, in which he fights for his freedom and the abolition of slavery. He describes his life throughout the 11 chapters and the life of the people surrounding him. It is considered one of the most influential pieces of writing and it has every right to be so, because people have gained a voice and the support needed to get their freedom, which should have never been taken from them.

To say the least, this book does not have many pages, but believe me when I say that these pages have been the hardest to read, and I postponed reading it, I still do, because I find it very hard to have been through that. I deeply empathize with the suffering of people of colour and I am infuriated that something so hideous has happened to them.

I will continue educating myself and, whenever I get the chance, other people in this aspect, because those are things everyone should know about, and never let them happen anymore.

I believe that this should be read by anyone who wishes to learn about history and be educated in these matters, to fully protect and support people of colour.
