What are you doing to keep your mind shut?

I was talking with a dear friend of mine and we both had the same conclusion. Sometimes we feel sad, we feel that we’re not doing enough with our lives. This modern disease that spreads in a second from a simple thought.

Overthinking is very fashionable. I see quotes and pictures all over social media about how we think we’re complicated and overthinkers. We want to believe we’re complex human beings with tangled thoughts and we’re always seeking the meaning of life. Which is cool, but not that cool when you’re awake at 3 a.m in the morning, lying awake and thinking about all the bad stuff is going on in your life.

We’ve been told by our parents that we’re in a better place than they were at our age. We have decent jobs in some glass ass offices in new buildings, music, and movies all day every day, people to hang out with, fancy places to eat, nice clothes and the right to vote. We can be who we want to be, we can express ourselves on social media and whatnot. All in all, we’re pretty privileged. So where’s the problem then?

Distractions. Every time we think we’re on track, we see out there someone who is richer than us, more successful, with a better social life, better car, better apartment, better looks. We beat ourselves up, comparing our lives every day. I do it, I know you do it too. And that’s how we fall, slowly but surely in the darkest places of our mind, in the void of not “being enough”.

I fall so bad, sometimes, that everything seems so awful. I can’t seem to pick myself up to see my friends, to read a book, to do anything. I just wanna lay in bed and watch stupid movie trailers on youtube for 3 hours straight. Why? Because it keeps my mind on mute, because I don’t have to take the commitment and watch a movie or do something productive. I just lay there. But sometimes, life happens and I need to leave my house, go to work, keep the machine running. Those mornings are the worst. I press the snooze button for a thousand times and I have a pep-talk with myself on why I should leave my bed.

Anyhow, on a regular basis, I am positive and energetic. But there are these distractions from my path. These bumps on the road that stop me and throw me backward. And I am not the only one.

What do we miss? What do we need? Why can’t we just enjoy the little things and fight for the greater ones? What’s the “bug” in our code? How do we fix ourselves?

How can we distract the distractions?
